Quick and easy transmission tune-up services offered by specialty service centers for as low as $29.95 gets many people into greater trouble later with their transmission. Oh no. We’re not implying they will sabotage anything…but they may as well. You see, they prey on people who believe they are getting their transmissions repaired. These so-called transmission specialty service centers know that customers believe they’re getting their transmission repaired when in fact the transmission tune-up is merely a maintenance item. It is never to be considered a substitute for repairing any transmission problem. Irreparable damage could be done to your car as a result of transmission tune-up services which lead customers to believe their problem is fixed… only to find out the hard way, their problem grew into very expensive numbers.

Unless your car is being serviced by a certified automotive service center, the free battery test is most often only a sales gimmick to sell you a new battery. These outlets know people are looking for free diagnostics on the assumption that the parts store will only sell you a solution “if you need it”. Unfortunately, all too often that is not the case. A free battery test is a regular part of normal maintenance checkups when you schedule maintenance with a certified automotive service center.

There is a very good reason service centers do not sell “engine” tune-ups anymore. Engine tune-ups involve sparkplugs, primarily, and constitute a maintenance item. They are not to be left as “repair work”. Unfortunately, there are many outlets that do treat them as if they were repair work. These outlets know they can attract people who are hoping to find quick solutions, inexpensive “repairs”. These services then find alleged “solutions” for “problems” without doing accurate diagnostic work. In other words, you will pay for what you don’t need in most instances. Since tune-ups primarily deal with sparkplugs, these are normally handled as maintenance items by reputable automotive service centers. In other words, no responsible, certified automotive service center will handle maintenance items as if they were automotive repairs. The two categories — maintenance and repairs — should be kept separate in your thinking. Always check your maintenance schedule and keep up to date. Always use certified automotive service centers who will perform accurate diagnostics as well as responsible maintenance for your car.

Of course, we all know that some lights can be left “on” when there isn’t necessarily any car problem. However, this is misleading. It is possible that there is no problem. But if there is a NEW problem that develops during the time the light is on, you would never know it. Why? Because the engine light message would have been activated. But the light was left on so there’s nothing more to activate. And since you have been led to believe that the light does not indicate the existence of a problem, you will now have no warning.

Always have engine light messages checked and properly turned off, so that, when a real problem again occurs, and the light comes on, you will know then there is a NEW problem that you must attend to.

Be careful of the “$69.95” brake services that offer you an unrealistically low price per brake job. Brakes are much more complex than these services will let on. That’s not to say that brake work must be expensive. But it IS to say brake work, if done poorly, can result in great expense. But they assure you the brakes can be done very economically, anyway. Realistically, there are far too many factors against which you must protect your car when you’re dealing with brakes. Cheap brake work typically does not care to rule out contaminated brake fluid, rusty brake lines, or brake caliper mounting hardware that can seize. There are a host of other problems which, if neglected, can lead to very expensive brake work later… not to mention the potential dangers to you and your family while traveling.

Always take your brake work to a certified Automotive Service Center where proper diagnostic work to be done and expenses can be lessened considerably in most cases, especially with regular maintenance.

Don’t kid yourself. Many automotive outlets discriminate. Well, let’s just say they try to take advantage of women drivers. We know we’re making a pretty serious charge when we say that but all too often we have found that automotive outlets and parts stores capitalize on the natural concerns of women who fear being stranded in their car and the related tendency to react when confronted with unusual noises, dashboard messages and other car problems. These services take advantage of these proper concerns by finding alleged “solutions” for “problems” which don’t exist. Often women pay for parts and services they did not need but were led to believe were necessary to protect their car.

The solution? The best way to prevent being stranded is to have your car scheduled regularly for proper maintenance. Additionally, refer to the emergency towing page on this website and keep both of the listed numbers in your glove compartment. That way, in the rare situation in which you could be stranded, you will always have two 24 hour service numbers at hand to call immediately.

However, responding to quick service advertising from outlets that promise cheap solutions is far more likely to get you stranded in the future (because they don’t have the capacity most times to properly diagnose, and they are not certified for proper maintenance and repair).
